Heightened Sensitivity

I have many people in my life who feel and experience the world with much more intensity than the average person. These people are in my life because I share this quality and I am attracted to it and the highs and lows it brings us. I never want to be numb to life rather I hope to experience the good and bad life throws me with open arms.

I feel that many artist have a heightened sensitivity in their senses and emotions. Artists seem to experience things on a raw emotional level that almost makes them obligated to create.

Heightened Sensitivity

Ashes

This piece utilizes a reference of the burn scar near Los Alamos, New Mexico. Just like this landscape, we all have scars and they affect us all differently. These scars can come from people or experiences or even our own emotions and we carry them with us through life. And I personally feel that it is okay that we have scars, they contribute to who we are and how we interact with others. Our scars make us unique and sometimes bring us inspiration or motivation. But I also feel it is important that we don’t let our scars define us and dictate our lives. We cannot turn back time and remove what caused the scar but we can choose how it influences us now. We have all been hurt but we still deserve love.

Jemez Springs

This piece expresses my appreciation for the beautiful New Mexico scenery. I started this painting out in the environment and it was a real pleasure experiencing all of the sites and sounds of the Jemez National Recreation Area. While painting I was surrounded by young rock climbers and their instructors who were conquering the impressive rock faces with determination and laughter. Painting this piece outdoors strengthened my relationship with nature and inspired me to pursue more outings like this one.

Unintentional

*SOLD*In this piece I am reflecting on my own relationship with masculinity. Growing up I was never overtly aware of the societal expectation to be manly, instead I lived in my own little world where anything that I did or said was not masculine or feminine but just a part of me. I feel that I possess many masculine and feminine qualities and I attribute this to a unique and accepting childhood that allowed me to be myself and grow into a true individual.
I encourage you to allow yourself to explore your personal identity and allow others to so the same because I find that once you are at peace with yourself you will be more accepting of others.

Solace

*SOLD*  "Solace" illustrates our inherent need for comfort and reassurance when the turbulence of life is too much. The beautiful yet unforgiving landscape that surrounds this figure represents this turbulence and how important it is for us to seek help when we need it. We are not defined by our struggles rather we are defined by how we react to them.

Terra

*SOLD*This piece displays comfort and intimacy with nature. I was a very tactile child growing up, I always found myself climbing trees, creating forts in bushes and wandering in tall grass in the outskirts of our yard. I built a relationship with my surroundings and really enjoyed the sensation of feeling familiar plants in my hands that brought up memories and happy thoughts. This piece brings a visual to this tactile relationship in a way that shows vulnerability, thoughtfulness and care for the nature that surrounds us.

Colorado Winter

*SOLD*  This piece expresses my gratitude for the beautiful state that I live in.  Colorado has been a key source of inspiration for much of my work and it somehow always has new beauty to share. The Boulder flatirons in particular always catch my eye as something so incredibly unique and dynamic. I am excited to explore and discover even more unique places in this diverse state.

Perception

*SOLD*  Our perception shapes our reality. Everything we see hear and experience is filtered by how we perceive it. When I view a landscape I experience it will my own personal emotions, thoughts and memories and these things shift how I see my surroundings. I feel it is important that we all acknowledge our filters that influence our reality so we can understand our biases then maybe we can shift our viewpoint and see how other people perceive the world around them.

Relation

This painting is a visual expression of how I view relationships. I really enjoy illustrating the relationship between land and water because in a way it is seamless and sometimes unnoticeable. Yet these very separate entities are complete opposites in their nature and they somehow come together to create beauty and harmony. The stable and consistent hills and mountains and abstracted through the reflections of the ever changing water to create an entirely new visual.

Purification

*SOLD* This is a piece about revitalization and renewed energy. In the natural world I see rain as one of the most symbolic purifiers. It seems to bring continuity to even the most diverse environments by affecting everything in someway.  Growing up I always felt that the rain washed away complications in my life because it brought my attention to the many things that were out of my control.  In life I feel it can be beneficial to identify the things that revitalize us and bring us energy so that we can seek those things in difficult times.

Passing Time

This piece is based off of a photo I took of a passing landscape while in the car. Sometimes I feel like life is passing by so quickly and it feels important to embrace the significant moments so that we can lengthen time just a little bit. This moment of clarity can be found in the moon rising over this passing landscape.

Wind Swept

In this piece I really wanted to emulate the look of snowy mountains in Colorado. When I am up in the mountains skiing or hiking I can't help but feel humbled by their overwhelming mass and immense time on this earth. When I am surrounded by a dynamic landscape I cant help by feel the sweeping movements that push and pull between the massive mountains. This piece is my interpretation of these movements.

Land and Sea

This piece directly explores my personal relationship with the land and the sea and my decision to leave an island surrounded my water to live somewhere landlocked. Growing up I never thought I had any sort of relationship with water, it was always just in my life in different ways like going to the beach or enjoying the rain. But once I left my island home of 18 years I realized how much I missed having the ocean near by and how important it was for me to experience water as much as possible. But along with this drastic change came a new fascination with the land around me. The mountains in Colorado are humbling, awe inspiring and majestic, they seem to reach into the sky with purpose and wisdom and they inspire me to paint. This Transcendent series of paintings merges my two biggest inspirations of art, I aim to create a seamless  relationship between land and sea and bring the viewer to a completely new environment.

Beyond Our Vision

This is a painting about perseverance and how important it is for us to envision our future with clarity and optimism. It can be easy to remain optimistic about your goals when things are going your way but true character is built them adversity strikes and our dream is blocked, distorted or challenged. It is up to us to stay true to ourselves and remain stubborn and idealistic with our dream always out in front of us.

Beyond Our Vision

Winter Frost

*SOLD* This painting encapsulates one of my favorite components of winter in Colorado. Being from Maui my first experience with snow was in Colorado Springs when a beautiful morning frost covered everything with soft fluffy snow. This piece aims to convey the soft silence that can be found in a snow-covered landscape. I find that this silence can encourage self reflection and a meditative state of mind.

New World

*SOLD* In my paintings I often draw my inspiration from intangibles such as emotions, concepts and mentalities but I sometimes find it is beneficial to go back to what first drew me into art in the first place. This would be awe inspiring landscapes because they bring me joy and make me think beyond myself and Glacier National Park certainly did this during my summer road trip. When viewing this in person I felt inspired to create a painting that could bring other people joy and reflective thoughts. This piece asks for humility and contemplation from it's viewer. The dynamic physical structures of our world have been in the process of creation for longer than we can comprehend.
